How to download and install CS 1.6

Install Counter-Strike 1.6 on Windows in 5 minutes: download, SmartScreen, folder, player models, first launch and fixes for common problems.

  1. Download the installer

    Press one of the buttons. The .exe downloads directly; the torrent can resume if your connection drops.

  2. Allow the installer to run

    Windows SmartScreen can show a blue window for apps it does not know yet. Click “More info”, then “Run anyway”.

    This is an illustration. The real window looks the same in your Windows language.

  3. Choose a folder

    Any folder works. A short path like C:\Games\CS16 makes configs and screenshots easy to find later.

  4. Pick the player models

    Classic models keep the original look; HD models are sharper. Reinstall any time to switch.

  5. First launch: language and name

    Open Options → System → Language to switch the menu language, then Options → Multiplayer to set your Player name and avatar.

  6. Find a game

    The Servers window lists online servers. No internet? Use New game → Game with bots.

If something goes wrong

The antivirus deleted or blocked a file

Game clients are often flagged by heuristics. Download only from this site, add the game folder to the exclusions and reinstall.

The game does not start or closes at once

Update the graphics driver, run hl.exe as administrator once and make sure the folder path has no unusual characters.

Black screen or wrong resolution

Press Alt+Enter to switch to a window, then set the native resolution in Options → Video.

The server list is empty

Allow hl.exe in Windows Firewall for private and public networks, then press Refresh. Some routers block UDP port 27015.

Low FPS or stutter
